How many days are enough for a Masai Mara safari?

We recommend at least 3 nights for a more relaxed Masai Mara safari. If your time is limited, 2 nights still gives you a good introduction. If you want a slower pace, 4 or 5 nights gives you more room.

Here’s the Masai Mara safari duration guide at a glance:

Days vs nights

When you ask how many nights in Masai Mara you need, count nights, not calendar days. A 2-night stay usually covers 3 calendar days, and your first and last days include arrival and departure. Package names often use days, so confirm the number of nights and game drives when you compare Masai Mara safari tours.

Is 2 days enough for a Masai Mara safari?

A short stay works if time is tight, but it has limits. You get one full day of game drives. You have less room to repeat a drive or adjust your plans.

Our Mid-Range Safari Package runs 2 to 3 days, depending on the itinerary you choose:

  • Day 1: Arrive, take an afternoon game drive, and enjoy dinner by the campfire.
  • Day 2: Take a full day of morning and afternoon game drives.
  • Day 3 (optional): Take a sunrise drive and leave after breakfast.

This suits you if you’re combining the Mara with other stops in Kenya. See the 2–3 day package.

What can you experience in 3 days?

A 3 day Masai Mara safari gives you more time for game drives without making the trip feel rushed. You can mix morning and evening drives, and you still have time to rest.

With 3 days you can:

  • Take more than one full day of game drives
  • Add a nature walk with one of our Masai guides
  • Rest at camp between drives

If your Masai Mara safari itinerary includes a road transfer, an extra night also helps you recover from the journey.

Masai Mara Safari Packages

Why consider a 4–5 day Masai Mara safari?

A 4 day Masai Mara safari or a 5-day stay suits you if you want a slower pace. Four or five nights allow more time for game drives, greater flexibility in planning your safari and a more relaxed experience.

A longer stay can suit:

  • Photographers: You can plan drives around different light.
  • Families: You can pace each day for younger guests.
  • Couples: You can balance game drives with quiet time at camp.
  • Anyone who wants to slow down: You can spend more time observing wildlife.

Our packages reflect this. The Honeymoon or Couples Safari is 4 days, the Family-Friendly Safari is 5+ days, and the Photography Tour is 6 days. You can also add experiences such as a hot air balloon safari, a Masai cultural village visit, or stargazing.

How long should you stay during the Great Migration?

For a Masai Mara Great Migration safari, we recommend at least 4 nights. Movement varies each year, so a longer stay gives you more flexibility.

What to keep in mind:

  • Timing varies. Herds may arrive from July, but movement and river crossings change from year to year.
  • Crossings are unpredictable. Allow enough time in your itinerary for multiple game drives.
  • Our location helps you reach the reserve. We’re 10 minutes from Mpuaai Gate and 15 minutes from Talek Gate.
  • Book early. July to October is our busiest season, and peak weeks book out early.

No safari length can guarantee a crossing. Ask us for current herd movement before you finalise your dates.

Choosing the right safari duration for your travel plans

Answer these questions to choose your length of stay:

  • How much time do you have? If it’s very short, the 2–3 day package is a good fit.
  • How will you travel? Our packages page lists daily flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Ol Kiombo or Keekorok airstrips, about an hour, and a road journey of 5–6 hours via Narok. A longer road trip is a good reason to add a night. Confirm current transfer details when you book.
  • What do you want to see? A migration-focused stay needs more nights than a general wildlife stay.
  • Who is travelling? Families, couples, and photographers often prefer a slower pace.

We can arrange transfers from Nairobi. Tell us your preference when you book.
