For a Masai Mara safari camp stay, pack light layers in neutral colours, closed walking shoes, sun protection, binoculars, and your travel documents. Use a soft-sided bag. Your Masai Mara safari packing list doesn’t need to be long, because a good camp covers the basics of your stay.

This guide covers the essentials of Kenya safari packing in the order you’ll need them.

What to expect at a Masai Mara safari camp

A tented camp gives you a real bed and a bathroom, but your days happen outdoors. You’ll spend most of your time on game drives and nature walks, so you pack for the outdoors, not for hotel life.

Here’s what that means for your bag:

  • Your days are active, so choose comfortable clothes that you can layer.
  • Evenings are relaxed, so you don’t need formal outfits.
  • Small camps and vehicles have limited space, so one soft bag per person works best.
Clothing for a Kenya safari

You don’t need a special safari wardrobe. Choose clothes you already feel comfortable in.

What to wear on a Kenya safari
  • Neutral colours: Earth tones such as beige, khaki, olive and brown are the usual advice, because bright colours and white show dust and can stand out in the bush.
  • Long sleeves and trousers: They protect you from sun and insects.
  • Light, breathable fabrics: Cotton, linen or quick-dry materials work well.
  • A warm layer: A fleece or light jacket helps if you feel the chill on an open vehicle.
  • Closed walking shoes: You’ll want them for nature walks and uneven ground.
  • Camp sandals: They’re handy for relaxing at your tent.
  • A light rain jacket: Useful in case of showers.
A note on camouflage

Skip camouflage-patterned clothing. It’s widely advised against in parts of Africa because it can be mistaken for military wear. Check your government’s travel advice if you’re unsure.

Safari camp essentials: gear and health
Gear for game drives
  • Binoculars: Magnification of 8x or 10x suits most wildlife viewing.
  • Camera and spare batteries: Bring extra memory cards too.
  • Power bank: It keeps your phone and camera charged between charging points.
  • Daypack: It holds your water, sunscreen and camera.
  • Travel adapter: Kenya uses Type G plugs.

Our camp runs on solar power, so charge your devices when you’re back at camp. We also have a photography lounge where you can review and edit your shots.

Sun, insect and health basics
  • Wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
  • Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal medication, kept in your hand luggage
  • A small first aid kit

Ask your doctor or a travel clinic about vaccinations and malaria prevention before you travel. Advice depends on your health and your route.

Travel documents

Check these before you leave:

  • A valid passport (confirm the validity your airline and Kenya require)
  • Your Kenya entry authorisation, if you need one
  • Travel insurance that covers medical care
  • Booking confirmations for your camp, flights and transfers
  • Copies of your documents, on paper and on your phone

Kenya’s entry rules, including the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), can change. Always check the official eTA portal at etakenya.go.ke and the Kenya Immigration Service before you travel.

What to leave at home

  • Hard-shell wheeled suitcases: Soft bags are easier to load into vehicles and small aircraft.
  • Camouflage clothing: See the note above.
  • Valuable jewellery: You won’t need it on safari.
  • Drones: Kenya regulates drone use, and conservation areas have their own rules. Check with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the reserve authorities before you bring one.

If you’re flying to the Mara on a light aircraft, baggage limits can be strict. Ask your airline or tour operator for your exact allowance before you pack.

Packing by season
  • July to October (migration season): The Great Wildebeest Migration passes through the northern game circuits closest to our camp in these months. Pack a hat, sun protection and a camera with spare batteries.
  • January to March: This is a good time for newborn wildlife and birds, so keep your binoculars in your daypack.
  • Rainy periods: Conditions can change, so check the forecast before you travel and pack a light waterproof layer.
