Choose by what you most want to see. Pick April to June for green landscapes, fewer crowds and good value. Pick July to October for the Great Wildebeest Migration, and book at least 4 nights, 6 to 12 months ahead. Pick November to March for calving season, clear skies, fewer vehicles and excellent photography light. Every window offers a good safari, so the right choice depends on your priorities, your dates and your group.

To keep it simple, think of a Masai Mara safari package as three decisions: when you travel, how many nights you stay, and who is coming with you. Below, we walk you through each season and show you how to match a package to your dates.

Understanding the Masai Mara Safari Seasons

We plan around three windows: April to June (green and quiet), July to October (the Great Wildebeest Migration), and November to March (calving season and clear skies). The Mara rewards a visit at any time of year.

What changes throughout the year

Here’s what each window looks like from our camp:

Months

What you’ll see

Crowds

Best fit

April to June

Lush green landscapes and excellent predator sightings

Fewer visitors, with great value pricing

First-timers and budget-conscious travellers

July to October

The Great Wildebeest Migration, with more than 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras arriving from mid-July

The busiest and most in-demand season

Anyone chasing river crossings

November to March

Calving season (January to March) with newborn wildlife and dramatic predator activity

Fewer vehicles

Photography, family and honeymoon trips

Three things shift with the seasons: what the animals are doing, how many other vehicles you share the plains with, and how far ahead you need to book.

How seasonality can shape your safari experience

The same camp gives you a different safari in each window. In August, your days revolve around the herds and the river. In the greener months, you have more space and a slower pace. In calving season, the light is excellent and the action turns to newborns and the predators watching them.

That’s why we don’t sell one fixed trip. When you compare Masai Mara tour packages, ask what the season will actually look like on your dates, not just what the itinerary lists.

Masai Mara Holiday

Masai Mara Safari Packages During the Dry Season

The drier months suit you if you want active predators, clear light and, from July to October, the migration. Choose longer stays for the best odds, and book early.

Wildlife viewing and game drives

Our guides tell us predators are most active in the dry season, which makes drives especially rewarding for lion, leopard and cheetah sightings. The drier stretch also overlaps with much of the migration season, when herds move through the northern game circuits closest to our camp.

Rainfall changes from year to year, so we never promise a calendar. If you want to know what conditions look like on your dates, ask us.

On every package, you can expect:

  • Daily guided game drives with a local Masai guide
  • 4×4 game drive vehicles with open roofs for photography and wildlife viewing
  • Small groups, because we don’t run overcrowded drives
  • Private vehicle options on all packages
  • Drive timing shaped by the bush, not a fixed timetable

Our guides grew up on this land. When something happens at dawn, you’re already on your way.

What travellers should consider when choosing a package

Dry-season dates fill quickly, so plan early. Keep these points in mind:

  • Length of stay. A longer stay gives you more chances to catch the action.
  • Park fees. Peak migration months, August and September, carry higher park fees than the rest of the year.
  • Your vehicle. If you’re photographing wildlife, ask about a private vehicle and drive times set around golden light.
  • Your base. A shorter drive to the gate means more time on the circuits. For us, that’s 10 minutes to Mpuaai Gate and 15 minutes to Talek Gate.

Masai Mara Safari Packages During the Wet Seasons

The greener months bring lush landscapes, fewer crowds, excellent predator sightings and great value pricing. They suit first-timers, budget-conscious travellers and anyone who prefers a quieter Mara.

What the greener months can offer

April to June is our quiet, green window. You get lush scenery, more space on the plains and some of the best-value pricing of the year. Predator sightings stay excellent, so you don’t give up wildlife for the savings.

For this window, we usually suggest our Mid-Range Safari Package, which runs 2 to 3 days. It’s a good way to see the Mara without a long commitment. Our Masai Mara holiday packages run year-round, so you don’t have to wait for the migration to have a great safari.

Weather and safari considerations

Rain is part of the green season, and it can change how your day unfolds. Here’s how to plan for it:

  • Stay flexible. We shape drives around what’s happening in the bush, so a shower doesn’t have to cancel your plans.
  • Ask about timing. Exact wildlife timing depends on rainfall, so keep your expectations open.
  • Plan the downtime. Your tent has a private deck, an ensuite bathroom and a hot shower, and the camp has a photography lounge with Wi-Fi.
  • Ask us directly. Send us your dates and we’ll tell you what to expect for your window.

If you’d rather have clear skies and fewer vehicles, consider November to March. December and January are ideal for families.

Choosing a Safari Package Around the Great Migration

Stay at least 4 nights, choose a camp close to the crossing points, and book 6 to 12 months ahead. Herds arrive from mid-July, and the Mara River crossings peak between early August and mid-September.

What makes the migration period different

Everything here depends on timing, and the herds don’t follow a calendar. Crossings depend on the animals, not the date, and the exact timing depends on rainfall. Some crossings continue into early October.

Three things set this season apart:

  • Scale. More than 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras arrive from mid-July.
  • Demand. It’s the busiest and most in-demand season.
  • Suddenness. Crossings can build quickly, so where you stay matters as much as the drive itself.
Planning around peak wildlife activity

Use this checklist:

  1. When to go. Herds start crossing into the Mara from mid-July. The crossings you’ve seen in documentaries peak between early August and mid-September.
  2. Where to stay. Choose a camp close to the crossing points, not a long drive away. We’re minutes from both Talek and Mpuaai gates.
  3. How long to stay. Book a minimum of 4 nights. A longer window means more crossing opportunities.
  4. How early to book. Camps close to the river, ours included, typically sell out 6 to 12 months ahead for August and September.
  5. Who guides you. Our guides talk daily with other guides and camps to track herd movement. When a crossing is building, you’re already on your way.

How to Choose the Right Masai Mara Safari Package for Your Travel Dates

On accommodation, you have two choices. Our 5 Standard Tents suit solo travellers and couples. Our 5 Family Tents give groups with children more room. Children of any age are welcome, and the camp is electric-fenced.

What to check before booking

Before you commit to any of the Masai Mara travel packages you’re comparing, check these seven points:

  1. Is the quote itemised? Park fees, meals and game drives should all be listed upfront.
  2. Who is your host? Ask whether you’re dealing with the camp itself or a third-party agent.
  3. Who guides you? Ask how well they know the area.
  4. What’s your vehicle setup? Ask about group size and private vehicle options.
  5. How do you get there? Ask about flights, road transfers and who arranges them.
  6. Can the plan flex? Ask whether you can adjust the itinerary to your priorities.
  7. What about dietary needs? We cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy-specific meals.
