Sort out five things first, in this order: who is travelling, when you want to go, how many nights you can spare, which travel documents you need and how you will reach the Mara. Once those are settled, activities, packing and daily schedules fall into place for your Masai Mara Holiday.

We live and work in the Mara, so we see the same planning gaps again and again. Guests choose their activities before they check their passports. Others book flights before they know how they will get from Nairobi to camp.

This guide walks you through the right order. You will find practical steps, tables you can copy into your notes and the local detail that only comes from hosting safari guests every week.

What Do You Need to Plan for a Masai Mara Holiday in 2027?

Settle who is travelling, your travel season, your number of nights and any special needs. Your documents and your route to camp come next, and the sections below cover both.

Think of the first four as the frame of your trip. When you compare Masai Mara holiday packages, each one will ask you for exactly these details, so settle them before you start emailing.

Start With Who Is Travelling

Your group decides your tent type, your drive style and your pace. Here is what to sort first, based on who you are:

If you are…

Sort this first

What suits you

A solo traveller

Your tent and your drive style

Standard tents, small group drives and a camp quiet enough to rest in

A couple or honeymooners

Privacy and special moments

Private drives, romantic bush dinners and a setting that does the work for you

A family with children

Tent size and daily pace

Family tents, flexible drive timing and child-safe nature walks. There is no minimum age

A wildlife photographer

Light and timing

Custom drive schedules built around golden light, a photography lounge and guides who understand the shot

Then Choose Your Season

The Mara rewards you at every time of year, so pick the season that matches what you want to see:

  • April to June: lush green landscapes, fewer crowds and great value pricing.
  • July to October: the Great Wildebeest Migration, and the busiest season of the year.
  • November to March: calving season from January to March, clear skies and fewer vehicles.

If the migration is your goal, settle your month early. Riverfront-adjacent camps fill fastest for August and September.

Decide How Many Nights You Can Spare

We recommend a minimum of 3 nights. Four or five nights give you a much fuller experience, with more flexibility on drive timing and time to slow down between drives. Short on time? A 2 to 3 day stay still gives you a real taste of the Mara.

Flag Special Needs Early

Tell us about them at the start, not the week before you fly:

  • Dietary needs: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy-specific meals are all available.
  • Children: we offer children’s menu options and drives paced for younger guests.
  • Interests: photography, birdwatching, culture or a romantic escape. Every itinerary is adjustable.

How Do You Get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi?

Fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to the Ol Kiombo or Keekorok airstrips in about 1 hour, or drive for 5 to 6 hours via Narok. We can arrange either one for you.

Both routes work well. Your choice comes down to how much time you have and what you want to see along the way.

What the Road Journey Feels Like

The drive takes you through the Rift Valley and on through Narok. It is long, but it is also your first look at Kenya beyond the city. If you choose the road, start early so you reach camp with time to settle in before an afternoon drive.

Tips for Flying In

Wilson Airport is Nairobi’s domestic airfield, separate from the international airport. If you land internationally, leave a comfortable gap before your onward flight. Small aircraft also tend to have strict luggage limits and often favour soft bags, so check your airline’s rules before you pack.

The Last Stretch Is Short

Our camp sits about 10 minutes from Mpuaai (Ol Kiombo) Gate and 15 minutes from Talek Gate. Once you land or arrive, you are close. We can arrange all your transfers from Nairobi as part of your package, so ask for them when you compare Masai Mara travel packages.

What Travel Documents and Entry Requirements Should You Check?

Check three things: your passport, your Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) and any health paperwork for your route. Do this before you book flights.

Kenya replaced traditional visas with an online eTA system from 1 January 2024. Most visitors now need an approved eTA before they travel. We are a camp, not an immigration authority, so always confirm the latest rules on the official government site at etakenya.go.ke and with your airline.

Your Documents Checklist
  1. A valid passport. The official eTA site asks for at least 6 months of validity and at least one blank page.
  2. An approved eTA. Apply online before you travel. In most cases every traveller needs their own application, children included.
  3. A passport-style photo or selfie. You will upload it with your application.
  4. Your travel details. Expect to give your dates and where you will stay. Our camp address is Foothills of Oldonyo Loip Hill, C14, Talek, Kenya.
  5. A printed or digital copy of your approved eTA. Carry it with your passport.
  6. Health paperwork. Some routes require a yellow fever certificate, for example if you arrive from an endemic country. Check this against your own itinerary.
  7. Travel insurance. We suggest you arrange it before you pay for flights.
Watch Out for These Common Slip-Ups
  • Using lookalike websites. Some third-party sites add fees. Apply through the official government site.
  • Leaving it late. Processing times vary, so do not leave your application for the final week.
  • Mismatched details. Enter your name and passport number exactly as they appear in your passport.
  • Short passport validity. A passport that expires within 6 months of arrival can stop your application.
Some Travellers Are Exempt

Certain nationalities and residency categories do not need an eTA, and some stay limits apply. Rules can change, so check your own passport against the official list before you rely on an exemption.

How Should You Plan Safari Transport, Activities and Daily Schedules?

Plan around two things: your game drive vehicle and your daily rhythm. Morning and afternoon drives anchor each day, and add-ons fill the gaps.

Good planning here protects your energy. A safari day is longer and more active than it looks on paper.

Your Game Drive Vehicle

We use 4×4 game drive vehicles with open roofs, built for photography and wildlife viewing. Our vehicles carry small groups, and we do not run overcrowded drives. Private vehicle options are available on every package.

Every Masai Mara safari package we run includes daily guided game drives, park entry fees and a local Masai guide. Your drives start from camp, so you spend your time in the wild instead of in transit.

How a 4-Day Stay Flows

Here is a real rhythm from our 4-day couples itinerary. Our other stays follow a similar pattern, adjusted for group size and pace:

Day

What happens

Day 1

Arrive, settle in and head out for a sundowner drive

Day 2

Full day of private drives, focused on migration or predators

Day 3

Morning drive, a free afternoon and a bush dinner

Day 4

Sunrise drive, then depart after breakfast

Notice the free afternoon on day 3. Build in downtime like that. It keeps you sharp for the drives that matter.

Choose Your Add-Ons

You can add experiences to any stay. Pick the ones that match your group:

Experience

What you get

Hot air balloon safari

A sunrise flight over the Mara River and plains, followed by a bush breakfast

Private bush dinner

A lantern-lit dinner just outside camp, perfect for honeymoons and anniversaries

Wildlife photography session

Guides who position you for the shot, with schedules built around golden light

Nature walk and tree planting

A walk with our in-house naturalist and a visit to our tree nursery

Masai cultural village visit

Traditions, dances and daily life, with income supporting the community directly

Stargazing

A Milky Way sky with zero light pollution, available any clear evening at camp

Wondering where you can combine a balloon safari with a tented camp stay? You add it straight onto your stay with us.

Plan Your Family Pace

Travelling with children? Space your drives, keep the afternoons flexible and add the nature walk. Our family itinerary gives younger guests a cultural village visit and a child-safe walk on day 5, so the trip is not drives alone. The village visit is USD 30 per adult.

Extend Your Trip Beyond the Mara

Want to see more of Kenya? We can combine your stay with:

  • Amboseli National Park: iconic Kilimanjaro views and large elephant herds.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park: flamingos, rhinos and scenic lakeside drives.
  • Diani Beach: white sand and turquoise water for a safari-and-sea finish.

What Should You Pack for a Comfortable Kenya Safari Holiday?

Pack layers, sun protection, water, a camera and comfortable closed shoes. Keep everything else light.

Whichever of our Masai Mara tour packages you choose, the packing list barely changes. Your days start early in an open-roof vehicle and end under a big sky, so you want clothes that adapt.

Your Packing Checklist

Category

What to bring

Why it helps

Clothing

Light layers in muted earth tones, plus a warm layer

Early drives and evenings feel cooler than midday

Comfortable closed shoes

You will walk around camp, and on nature walks

You spend long hours in an open vehicle

Water

A refillable bottle

You stay hydrated between meals

Camera gear

Camera, lenses, spare batteries and memory cards

Sightings come quickly and rarely repeat

Optics

Power

A Kenyan plug adapter and your chargers

Health

Insect repellent and personal medication

You will not want to hunt for them in the bush

What You Do Not Need to Pack

You can leave the camping gear at home. Our eco tents come with cosy beds, ensuite bathrooms, hot showers and flush toilets. The camp runs on solar power and has charging points for your camera gear, so you can recharge between drives.

Pack for Your Own Trip
  • For photographers: add a lens cloth and a dust cover. We also give you a dedicated photography lounge.
  • For couples: bring a smart-casual outfit for your bush dinner.
  • For families: bring hats and an extra layer for children. Evenings and early starts can feel cool.
  • For stargazers: bring a warm layer for your night under the Milky Way.
Pack Light for Small Aircraft

If you fly in, soft bags are easier on light aircraft. Check your airline’s weight limit and pack to it.

How to Choose the Right Masai Mara Safari Package for Your Travel Dates

Start with your dates, then match your trip length, priorities and tent type. Our four core packages cover quick trips, photography, families and couples, and we adjust each one to your dates.

On accommodation, you have two choices. Our 5 Standard Tents suit solo travellers and couples. Our 5 Family Tents give groups with children more room. Children of any age are welcome, and the camp is electric-fenced.

What to check before booking

Before you commit to any of the Masai Mara travel packages you’re comparing, check these seven points:

  1. Is the quote itemised? Park fees, meals and game drives should all be listed upfront.
  2. Who is your host? Ask whether you’re dealing with the camp itself or a third-party agent.
  3. Who guides you? Ask how well they know the area.
  4. What’s your vehicle setup? Ask about group size and private vehicle options.
  5. How do you get there? Ask about flights, road transfers and who arranges them.
  6. Can the plan flex? Ask whether you can adjust the itinerary to your priorities.
  7. What about dietary needs? We cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergy-specific meals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you have strong odds. The Masai Mara has one of the highest Big Five densities of any reserve in Africa, and lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino sightings are common. Our location near Mpuaai Gate puts you close to the corridors where these animals are most active. No guide can promise a specific sighting, because wildlife moves on its own schedule.

Yes, with the right setup. We set no minimum age for our family-friendly stays. You get spacious family tents, children’s meals, flexible drive timing and an electric-fenced camp. Our guides are experienced with younger guests and adjust the pace of each day.

Yes to both. The camp runs on solar power and offers charging points for your camera gear. WiFi is available in the lounge, so you can stay connected when you need to and unplug completely when you do not.
